Richard and his wife Barbara run The B&R Samizdat Express, a small company that publishes book collections on CD and DVD. He writes and edits the free electronic newsletter Internet-on-a-Disk , runs online stores at Yahoo http://store.yahoo.com/samizdat and eBay, publishes "Blogging about Books", and runs the Web site www.samizdat.com. These projects are frequently mentioned as important resources for education and for the blind, and their Web site was named one of the top 50 in the world by Net Guide magazine (September 1995) and the Best Personal Home Page of 1995 by Internet World magazine (January 1996).

For 19 years (up until 1998), Richard Seltzer worked for Digital Equipment, then Compaq, focusing on the Internet for the last five years, most recently as "Internet Evangelist." He was one of the handful of people who helped Digital Equipment to recognize and take advantage of new business opportunities on the Internet as the first major company to use the Web for marketing. For Digital, he wrote The AltaVista Search Revolution (Osborne/McGraw-Hill) which The Library Journal called "indispensable."

Based on his work at Digital/Compaq and as an independent Internet marketing consultant, he wrote Web Business Bootcamp (Wiley), Shop Online the Lazy Way (Macmillan), and Take Charge of Your Web Site (MightyWords).

He recently published a CD entitled My Internet: a Personal View of Internet Business Opportunites, which includes four books of his, 162 articles, and 49 newsletter issues with the practical information you need to build your own personal Web site or profitable Internet-based business, helping you to become a player, rather than just an observer/consumer in this new business environment. He also published another CD entitled Everything But the Internet: Fiction, Articles, and Plays. Both of these are available his online store http://store.yahoo.com/samizdat There, too, you can buy a videotape or DVD of his speech about "The Future of the Internet and the Future of Business."

He calls himself an "Internet evangelist" because of his passion for the subject and his contagious enthusiasm. Prior to joining Digital in 1979, he worked for Benwill Publishing, as editor of Electronics Test Magazine, and managing editor of Circuits Manufacturing Magazine. He also contributed to such other publications as Digital Design, Electromechanical Design, Microelectronics Times, and Minicomputer News. Richard graduated from Yale in English in 1969, and has a masters in comparative literature (Russian, French, and German) from the U. of Mass. in Amherst. His historical novel The Name of Hero (set in Russia, Ethiopia, and Manchuria in 1900) was published by Tarcher/Houghton Mifflin in 1981. He successfully self-published a satirical fable The Lizard of Oz (1974) (also available as an online audio book) and a collection of children's stories Now and Then and Other Tales from Ome (1976). And he translated from the Russian two books about Ethiopia in the 1890s by Bulatovich (the "hero" of The Name of Hero) -- From Entotto to the River Baro and With the Armies of Menelik II. These translations were recently published by Africa World Press/Red Sea Press as Ethiopia through Russian Eyes. He has also written a variety of articles, stories, and plays, many of which are available at his Web site. He has also written two unpublished novels, The Attic, a romantic thriller (with Ethel Kaiden) and Breeze, which is set in the present-day as well as in the time of the Trojan War. He lives in Boston with his wife Barbara and two of their four extraordinary children. You can reach him at seltzer@samizdat.com.
