main business goal of Web site -- To provide a one-stop search site for Internet users.
peripheral benefits -- Enhances users awareness of the vast amount of information available to them on the Internet.
in what sense is this site a success? -- It was started as a utility for personal use, and has grown into the most comprehensive search resource page available. It serves approximately 20,000 users per day, from almost every country in the world.
to what do you attribute your success? -- Several things:
nature of content -- A compilation of various forms-based search tools found on the Internet. They have been combined together to form a consistent interface and convenient All-in-One search point.
target audience -- All World Wide Web users looking to easily locate information on the Net,
size of current audience in terms of visitors (not hits) per month -- 620,000
do you own your own Web server? -- No
if no, name and URL of host company -- AlbanyNet, http://www.albany.net
authoring tools used -- No special tools used besides standard text editor.
site statistical package used -- Currently limited to script-based hits counter and "Analog"
are stats publicly viewable? No
other special software used -- None
special features of the site intended to attract and hold audience -- The design of the site is meant to imitate an exploding list function. As such, clicking on a category will expand that category and the remainder of the page remains the same. This is accomplished by breaking the content into extremely modular portions and combining them on-the-fly by using server-side includes.
do you use outside design services? -- No
do you use other outside services? No
size of internal staff devoted to your Web site -- Currently 2, myself an someone to assist with maintenance
approximate quantity of browsable content -- text (Mbytes) -- 1 Meg
graphics (Mbytes) -- < 1 Meg
audio (Mbytes) -- 0
video (Mbytes) -- 0
do you provide Web-based access to databases? -- Yes
if yes, type and size -- Search engines of all kinds. . .
do you allow interaction among users and with users? -- No
biggest headache faced -- Other people/parties copying and publishing the pages under their own names. I have found several sites that have simply replaced the copyright notice with their own and republished the content verbatim.
While it flattering to know they find the site useful, it is appalling to find someone calling your work their own.
most gratifying moment -- Everyday! I receive approximately 20-30 e-mail messages a day thanking me or otherwise complementing the site. This feedback is wonderful and it makes all the effort required to maintain the site worth it.
wish list (what you want to do to make your site even more successful) -- I have several wished for the site: more mirror locations (particularly non-English sites), consolidation of the forms so users wouldn't have to enter their query for each site to searched, and obtain sponsorship for the site to allow me to better maintain the content.
and what you need for that) -- Time, money, time, money, time, money. . .
