A library for the price of a book.

We are making books available on CD and DVD, selected and organized in an easy-to-use, well-indexed format. These CDs and DVDs are designed for use on PCs and recent Macs (OS X), not CD music players or the DVD video players that hook up to a television. You can buy these CDs here using the PayPal secure payment system, by clicking on the PayPal shopping cart buttons on this page. Or you can buy online at our new store http://store.yahoo.com/samizdat, which uses Yahoo's secure ordering system. As incentive to get you to try our PayPal shopping cart, when you use it, there is no charge for shipping (even for air mail outside the US).

User's Guide: Suggestions on how to get the most out of your books on CD ROM

Our mission is to use technology to benefit both readers and authors, making books extremely inexpensive, easy to use, and easy for anyone to publish. All our CDs and DVDs are hand-crafted. The selection and organization is based on our judgement, not automated programs. And the books are presented in the simplest, most easily accessible form (plain text, with no compression and no encryption).

We continuously update our CDs, adding new books as they become available. If you buy a CD from us, you can buy up to four updates of that CD (which has all the books, not just the new ones) for a discounted price.  The update price is $10 per CD and $30 per DVD.  So the update price of a 2-CD set (like American Literature) would be $20, and for a 3-CD set (like British Literature) would be $30. And the price for an update of our Complete Book DVD set would be $90. You can see the list of all books recently added at our update page www.samizdat.com/update.html

We also publish books from Amazon's new Kindle book reading device:
Load your Kindle with great books at low cost. Over a thousand 99-cent books for your Kindle from B&R Samizdat Express.

A Year of Reading

In a good year, I read about 100 books. Our Year of Reading CD contains 100 classic books that I'd recommend. Most of these are relatively short. Many are collections of short stories and poetry. I've avoided plays and reference books, aiming for books that should work well for people who listen to books (using text-to-voice conversion programs) rather than reading them on a computer screen. Woodhouse English-Greek Dictionary

At the request of scholars in the field, I am making the rare and very useful Woodhouse English-Greek Dictionary available on CD. The Greek characters mean that "plain-text" isn't an option for this book.  So I did the CD version as a series of images of the pages of the original book, with a linked index page that lists all the English words that are defined. This means that you can search or browse through the index page to find the word you want and then click to see an image of the original book page with that word with the ancient Greek equivalents. Please note that since the heart of the work is in the form of images, unfortunately, this CD version  will not be useful for the blind. Sample the look-and-feel of this book on CD

We have twelve Classic Collection CD offerings

Books from the Great Books of the Western World ® Collection is based on the table of contents of the 54-volume first edition published by Encyclopaedia Britannica Inc. in 1952. This CD contains electronic versions of about two thirds of the works in that printed book collection. The Table of Contents shows the organization by volume of the original collection.  The folders/directories are organized by author.Books originally written in languages other than English appear on the CD in English translation, but often not the same translation as the printed collection. Of the 54 volumes, this CD contains the complete or nearly complete contents of 29 volumes and partial contents of 14 volumes.  It omits the contents of 11 volumes. Omissions are noted in the Table of Contents in brackets and with the word "unavailable". All these books are in plain text form, except one by Euclid which is in Acrobat (.pdf) to show the illustrations. Table of Contents

Books from the Harvard Classics ® Collection   is based on the table of contents of the Harvard Classics ® set of books AKA Dr. Eliot's Five Foot Shelf (a 51-volume collection of great works) first published in 1909 plus the Harvard Classics ® Shelf of Fiction (a separate 20-volume collection) first published in 1917.  Both those collections were edited by Harvard University President Charles W. Eliot (1834-1926). This CD contains electronic versions of the great majority, but not all of the works selected by Dr. Eliot.  Books originally written in languages other than English appear here in English translation, but often not the same translations as the original.  The Table of Contents shows the organization by volume of the original Harvard Classics ® collection.  The folders/directories are organized by author. All these books are in plain text format. Table of Contents

Books Behind the Classics Illustrated ®  Comics. Back in the 1950s I was an avid reader and collector of Classics Illustrated ® comic books. I bought every one I could find in stores, got a monthly subscription, and ordered everything else from the publisher as back issues. And I revered the original books honored by inclusion -- those were the true "classics"; and went out of my way to buy them and read them. About ten years ago, when I realized that the paper was deteriorating and that the comics would all turn to dust before my grandchildren could enjoy them, I sold the collection through Ebay. Now it finally occurred to me that all but 26 of the original 168 classics are now in the public domain and available in electronic form. Here I have assembled all those onto a single CD. Gogol and Russian Literature is built around Gogol's Art: a Search for Identity by Laszlo Tikos, the best book ever written about Russia's most enigmatic and intriguing author. Nikolay Gogol (1809-1852) created a new direction in Russian letters, which was further developed in the 19th century by writers like Dostoyevsky and Rozanov, and in the 20th century by Bely, Bulgakov and Sinyavsky. It also includes the full text of Dead Souls, Tara Bulba, The Inspector General, and St. John's Eve by Gogol, plus great books by Dostoeyevsky, Tolstoy, Chekhov, Pushkin, Turgenev, Andreyev, Gorky, Kuprin, and Lermontov, plus works on Russian history, including two "Country Studies" -- Russia and Belarus (birthplace of Gogol) -- which were originally published as printed books by the Library of Congress between 1987 and 1995.

Email Discussion of How to Get the Most Out of Books on CD

We publish plain text books (unencrypted) on CD ROM, and we want to provide a simple way for customers and other interested people to share their insights into how to get the most out of this new way of reading and studying. To do so we have set up an email discussion group at Yahoo. All are welcome to join and to post here, but I'll manage this group in "moderated" style, filtering messages before they go out to the whole group, to control the volume of the messages and to make sure that they are on-topic. Tips and information that would be helpful to people you have plain text books on CD are welcome -- including examples of how you are using yours, suggestions for improvement,  suggestions for future CDs, and useful/interesting texts found on the Web that should be included in future CDs. To subscribe, go to the discussion group Web site at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/plaintextbooksoncd  or send a blank email to plaintextbooksoncd-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

"Talking" software included on all our book CDs

Text-to-voice conversion software can allow you to hear as well as read these books. So you can test this capability and decide if it might be valuable to you, we include the include the installation file for ReadPlease 2003 on this CD. You can use that file to install a trial copy of ReadPlease Plus, which is a commercial-quality product and can read files of any size. This trial copy is good for 30 days, after which, if you wish, you could buy a license from ReadPlease for $49.95. As an alternative, you can use that same file to install their free version, which doesn't expire, but which can only handle 16K of text at a time; which means that to read a book, you would have to copy and paste one peice of text after another.

Click here if you would like to install this software. When you click on that link, you will be asked wheter you want to save it on your computer or just run it. Choose Save -- it will only take about 10 Mbytes; so choose Save. Then select which version you want to install and the directory that you'd like to put it in. When the rapid, automatic installation is done, you will be able to open ReadPlease by clicking on an icon on your desktop.

When running ReadPlease, click on File, then Open, and browse to the texts you are interested on the CD (or any other text file you have). Click on Play and it will start "reading" the book aloud to you. Highlight a chunk of text (of any size) with your browser and then click on Selection, and it will read the text you selected. Controls in the right column allow you to change the speed of the voice (with a sliding bar), change the font size (with a sliding bar), and switch among four different voices (with the right and left arrows).

When you run ReadPlease, you see the text, with yellow highlighting moving from one word to the next, while you hear that same text. And you can at any time edit the text in the video window. Just position your cursor, click you mouse, and type whatever you like -- for instance, annotation or marks to show where you last stopped reading. Then save the edited file on your hard drive.

Please keep in mind that ReadPlease is their software not ours. They are the experts on it. They have even better versions with even clearer, more natural voices, which they sell. You can listen to samples at their Web site www.readplease.com, where you can also see detailed help files.  And you can contact them at: ReadPlease Corporation, 121 Cherry Ridge Road, Thunder Bay, ON, Canada P7G 1A7.
