PERSONAL LIST OF TOP NOVELISTS 1972-2006 AND MY FAVORITE BOOKS OF THEIRS

Greatly impressed by the The Goldbug Variations by Richard Powers, back in 1992 I made a list of my favorite novelists of the last 20 years and my favorite books of theirs. Since then, I've continued to add to it. Here's what I've got for now. (The order is totally arbitrary -- I love them all.)

Where did this come from? I'm a compulsive list maker, and have kept a running tally of all the books I've read since the seventh grade (1958) . Along the way, I've highlighted books that I particularly enjoyed.

Looking back over the list, I was curious to check my tastes in recent fiction -- books that I read 1973-1995, that were written or first published during that period (approximately) and that I particularly enjoyed. These are books that I came upon on my own after grad school. (I don't include classics that I finally got around to reading).

The dates are when I read the books, not when they were published. (Since I typically read paperbacks, there's probably at least a year and sometimes as much as 10 year's gap between when the book was originally published and when I got around to reading it.)

Here's the year by year list of the ones I particular liked, from which I picked the above "winners". I notice that there are a lot more this year (1995) than any year before, and wonder if the quality of fiction is on a major upswing or if I was simply lucky in my choice of what to read.
