Inuyasha: *huge sigh* What now?
Kunoichi: Uh...I dunno. I'll tell you later.
Corisu Li: While she's thinking, on with the story! Oh, and I don't
own anybody except Ninsei, Kunoichi, and Ayako.
Inuyasha was frozen in disbelief. 'All of this shit we've gone through, and he wants to kill us NOW?' He struggled vainly, but he couldn't move an inch. It felt as though he had been nailed down, his whole body encased in stone.
And then, when the tentacles were an inch from the pair, there was a bright flash of pink light. A single purified arrow flew in front of them destroying the pointed appendages and freeing Inuyasha and Kagome from the binding spell. Stunned, Kagome raised her eyes to the last person that she thought she would see.
Kikyou turned cold eyes to Naraku. "How DARE you!" she spat. "Manipulating them into thinking that I work for such a disgusting creature such as yourself!" She stepped up to Inuyasha and Kagome. "Don't you dare believe him! When he said 'the undead one' he wasn't referring to myself!"
Kagome narrowed her eyes. "I know that you cannot lie in a way that your aura doesn't pick up, but I see no other person that he could have been talking about."
"My youkai have been watching. This puppet was merely an escort for-"
"Me."
Instantly, everyone (even Kikyou, who knew who had spoken), looked around for the source of the voice. And then, a woman emerged from the shadows. Kagome gasped as she recognized her.
The woman was beautiful, but the chilling aura around her seemed to freeze the air. She looked very different than before, her pale skin providing a startling contrast to her long black hair that was braided down her back. She was dressed in a vibrant emerald-colored kimono, obviously meant to match her eyes. But it didn't match, at least not anymore. Kagome noticed that the woman's eyes, once bright and lively, were now a dull and dark green. Despite the differences, however, Kagome couldn't help but recognize her. It's very difficult to forget your own sensei.
"Ayako?" Kagome whispered.
Ayako stepped forward, her feet barely seeming to touch the ground as she walked. "Hai. Master Naraku has revived me."
Naraku let out a chain of 'Kukuku's. "It was quite a trivial manner to retrieve the dead miko's ashes from the palace of Inazuma. As a youkai, she came to me for training. I accepted, seeing the potential within her. I see the same potential even in death. Kikyou, you have failed me numerous times... but she is flawless. She is not fueled by hatred, love, or sadness. She is the perfect mind slave. Of course, I have no intention of tainting such a minion with a human soul, but she doesn't care... and I will use her to finally destroy you all."
Kagome couldn't tear her gaze from Ayako. She looked just like she had in her dreams, only she seemed completely...flat. And if they were to battle her, Kagome knew that they would lose. She was nowhere near as powerful as Ayako.
With this whirling in her brain, she asked, "Why is she human? Why isn't she youkai like she was when she died?"
Naraku looked at her for a second, then said, "I don't know why I bother to answer your questions, but I shall. It doesn't matter. You will die soon anyway. She is human because her true form is human. You cannot resurrect the effects of a poison. Simple, fool, ne?"
Inuyasha was fuming. "Naraku! How dare you toy with death again! Have you no respect?" His claws were instinctively clenching and unclenching, and his look was murderous.
Kikyou took a more direct approach. She put an arrow in her bow, took aim and struck 'Naraku' in the center of his chest. The body disappeared and a wooden doll fell to the ground, the hair wrapped around it fluttering in the aftershock of her attack. She turned to Ayako. "You're next. Vile beings like you don't deserve to live!"
Ayako gave a strange half-smile. "Are you including yourself?" Her aura flared into life, a deep purple.
"You have no soul within you! Only enchantments that give you mobility and speech! You are nothing more than a female version of the puppet that I just effortlessly destroyed! And that is also the fate that awaits YOU!" Kikyou strung another arrow and let fly at the other miko.
Effortlessly, Ayako snatched the arrow out of the air, channeling her own aura into it and canceling out the attack, dropping the spent arrow to the ground at her feet, smoldering. She then waved her arms in a tight circle and formed a bow and arrow from sheer energy.
'Darn.' Kagome thought, despite the situation. 'I really wanted to know how she did that.'
Just before Ayako let fly, however, her head inclined and she stared off blankly, her eyes becoming even more glazed. After a few seconds, she let her energy weapons vanish and concealed her aura. "Yes, Master Naraku." The wind blew, and she turned and walked away, her braid whipping behind her as she disappeared.
Kikyou glared after her. "How dare she compare me to herself! At least I have a purpose here! She is here just to serve that bastard!" She turned to Inuyasha and Kagome. "I would understand if you refuse to trust me, but I strongly insist that you do. With that miko on Naraku's side, it will be much more difficult."
Kagome thought for a second, then said, "We will trust you once more, Kikyou. I won't let Naraku get away with insulting my sensei's memory." She punched her fist into her hand.
Inuyasha stared for a moment, then spoke. "Feh. She's my mate, so if she trusts you, I do. Just remember your part of the deal, Kikyou."
Kikyou nodded, and more of her youkai descended and began to wrap themselves around her. "I'll follow the abomination. Remember to meet me in the black forest when you can." And before either of the other two could open their mouths, she had risen from the ground and disappeared in the direction that Ayako had gone.
"Kagome, I don't know if I want you to fight anymore. It's too dangerous for you," Inuyasha said, not meeting her eyes.
Kagome bristled. "Hey! If you haven't noticed by now, I'm pretty damn strong! I can handle myself!"
"It's not that I don't think you can do it. I just don't want you to. You're my mate, and I-"
Kagome cut him off by brushing her lips over his. "Yes. I am your mate. What kind of mate would let their own go running around without their better half?" Inuyasha scowled, and she quickly added, "I know that you don't need my protection. I just know I can help."
Inuyasha scoffed and turned in the direction of the village. "We'll talk about this later. Now, let's get some rest." Kagome looked up and was startled to see that night was falling. With a nod, she followed him back to Senpai.
Neither noticed the arrow that Ayako had blocked and channeled her energy into burst into flame. Purple flame.
--------------------------------
Ninsei got to his feet as he smelled Inuyasha and Kagome nearby. Motioning to Kunoichi, he said, "Come with me, Kunoichi-san. Our friends may have a bit of trouble at the gate."
Kunoichi nodded and rose, following him from the inn. The wild story that they had told her still whirled in her head. They had said that they were after a powerful youkai, and their friend was undergoing a test to get stronger. Of course, they had gone into much more detail, but those were the main points. She had gotten the feeling that they were keeping something from her, but she couldn't put her finger on it. She got a pretty good idea, however, when she saw Inuyasha and Kagome at the gate. Sango and Ninsei had never mentioned that their friends were hanyou... sure, Shippou and Kirara were cute, but she'd never expected them to traveling with someone so dangerous...
And dangerous was the idea that she got from Inuyasha, who was in the process of throttling a guard through the bars of the gate.
"Whaddya mean you won't let us in?!?! Listen, bakayarou, our friends are in there! Open up!"
Kagome was standing beside him, looking embarrassed and apologizing even as Inuyasha yelled. Kunoichi gaped for a while before clearing her throat and saying, "Er, Kitao-san? They are guests of me and my Jii-sama. I would appreciate it if you'd let them in."
Inuyasha dropped Kitao, who scuttled backward on his butt, and said, "Oh, so you're awake, wench? For a second, I thought you'd killed yourself. Put up a good fight, though, and that shield was pretty strong for a novice like you."
Kunoichi stared for a second. "What are you talking about?" Then, the first part of what he'd said registered in her head. "HEY! I'm not a wench! My name is Akimoto Kunoichi, and you'd do well to remember it, baka!"
Kagome smirked. This girl reminded her so much of herself that it was funny. She called to the girl, "Atashi wa Kagome desu. This is Inuyasha. He's not really as tough as he acts. In fact, he's a big puppy inside!" (a/n: Gomen if I don't use Kagome's full name. Ever since she mated with Inu-chan, she dropped it.)
"I am NOT a puppy!" Inuyasha roared. Kagome tweaked his ears and he growled, pulling her hands down and folding his arms, turning his nose up.
Kunoichi giggled, then went to the gate. Undoing the complex latch (as she had done numerous times, sneaking out of the village to explore), she swung the gate open and allowed the pair to enter.
Once inside, Kagome greeted Ninsei and asked for details about Miroku's condition since his return.
"He hasn't improved. He hasn't worsened either. I suspect that he'll awaken in about two weeks. Then, he'll need time to recover and learn to control his abilities. I suspect it will take about four weeks until we can leave this place."
'Four weeks!' Kagome thought worriedly. 'That's a whole month! We'll be left with about two weeks to find and defeat Naraku!'
'We can pull it off, koi.' She heard Inuyasha in her head and glared at him.
'Stop that!'
Inuyasha shrugged. "Now you know how it feels," he said aloud, turning and walking in the direction that Ninsei had said the inn was located.
To Kunoichi's confused look, Ninsei chuckled and said, "It's a youkai mating thing. They can speak in their minds, even read each other's minds."
Kunoichi nodded in understanding, then blushed as she realized that she was talking about mating with a near-perfect stranger. Ninsei, sensing her embarrassment, said, "Maybe we should head back? We will want to hear the outcome of their battle."
Speaking of information led Kunoichi's mind back to what Inuyasha had said. "Ninsei-san, what did Inuyasha mean when he said that I 'put up a good fight'? And what was this 'shield' he was talking about?"
Ninsei looked flustered and looked away. "We do have a bit of explaining to do. Everything will be explained at the Uchida." He walked off after Inuyasha, trying to avoid more questions.
Kagome put a hand on the girl's shoulder. "I'm sure it's nothing serious. Ninsei's always a bit melodr..." She trailed off as she felt a jolt race up her arm from the place where she was touching Kunoichi. It was a familiar energy, and immediately, she realized what Ninsei was talking about. This girl was Ayako! Removing her hand from her shoulder, Kagome managed, "Er... we'd better get going! Don't want to miss that information!" Uttering a strangely high-pitched laugh, she raced off at top speed, managing to catch up with Inuyasha and whisper her newfound information to him.
Kunoichi sighed. What now? It was always something... and now youkai were consorting with them? She didn't see how her grandfather seemed so friendly with them, even though they were nice. But Ninsei was a different story. He was so kind, warm, and polite. Grinning through a flush, she followed the others to the Uchida Inn. (a/n: Kuno-chan does not know that Ninsei is a youkai. Flawless human disguise, remember?)
-------------------------------------
"WHAT?!?!" Sango screeched. "Naraku was there?"
Inuyasha had reached the point in their conversation where Inuyasha had released the Kaze no Kitsu and destroyed the youkai. He had, of course, left out the part about Kunoichi attacking the youkai and projecting a shield spell at Kagome's request. "A puppet, but yeah."
"What did he want?" Ninsei asked.
"To kill us, what else?" Kagome said, leaning back against the wall and closing her eyes.
"And we found out that he's resurrected Ayako, much like the way Orasue (sp?) did Kikyou." Inuyasha continued. Everyone's eyes briefly darted to Kunoichi, with the exception of her grandfather's.
Kunoichi noticed this, but said nothing. Shippou did, however, asking, "But how is she back without a soul?"
Again, everyone's eyes snapped to Kunoichi, but she let it slide once more. Maybe it was a fluke.
"Kikyou said something about spells and enchantments that give her mobility and speech. Maybe Naraku found a way around that particular barrier." Kagome answered.
Mr. Akimoto scratched his head. "Why wouldn't she have a soul?"
Kagome chose her words carefully. "Ano... it wouldn't return to her if her soul has already been...reincarnated."
Once more, everyone's gaze shifted to Kunoichi. She'd had enough of this. Jumping to her feet, she cried, "Why do you all keep looking at me like that? Tell me, already. I mean, it's not like I'm this Ayako person's reincarnation!" Her angry look became one of understanding as the silence in the room told her that she had hit the nail on the head.
"I don't understand," Mr. Akimoto began. "Reincarnations walk among us every day. What makes this Ayako so different?"
"She was a miko," Kagome answered. She turned her eyes to Kunoichi. "And so are you."
"A...a miko?" Kunoichi could manage no more than this.
"Hai." Kagome then proceeded to tell about how they had found her.
"So...you're saying that I have...powers?"
Kagome nodded, then fire-conjured a normal-sized black cat that padded around the room. Kirara hissed at it, but Shippou sat and petted it. Kunoichi's eyes were wide. "And I can do that?"
"With training, hai. If you like, I can teach you. Most likely, it will be a month before our friend is well enough to travel once more. I am sorry to intrude for so long," she added hastily.
"It is no problem," Mr. Akimoto said. "However, I would be willing to compensate you for your time in teaching my granddaughter of her abilities."
Kagome put up a protesting hand. "No. I have nothing more to do with my time, and I think it's the least that I can do."
Mr. Akimoto seemed to consider this, then nodded. "Fine. Should I book more rooms for you to stay in?" He motioned to Sango, Ninsei, Kagome, and Inuyasha.
Ninsei bowed graciously. "I would appreciate it."
Sango shook her head. "I will stay here with Miroku. There is a spare futon in here."
Kagome and Inuyasha also gave negative responses. Kagome looked out of the window and pointed at a tall tree near the window of the inn. "We'll sleep there. The nights are very warm this time of the year."
Mr. Akimoto looked stunned, but composed himself quickly. "As you wish. If you would follow me, Ninsei-san, I will reserve your room and take you there."
Ninsei nodded and the two men left the room. Kagome yawned hugely, and Inuyasha grinned. 'Sleepy?'
Kagome nodded, eyes unfocussed. 'Long day.' She cast a bemused glance at Kirara, who was asleep, and Shippou, who was also sleeping, the black cat held firmly in his arms. Smiling, she waved her hand and the cat evaporated.
Before anyone could say anything else, out loud or otherwise, Kunoichi had leapt forward and clasped Kagome's hands in hers. "When can we start our lessons?"
Kagome blinked. "Ano...tomorrow is fine, I guess."
The girl grinned so widely that her eyes instinctively closed. "Arigatou! I'll study hard, I promise!" She skipped from the room, calling, "Oyasumi nasai, Sango-san, Inuyasha-san, and Kagome-sensei!"
Kagome stared after her. 'Sensei'? Oh, Kami-sama. What had she gotten herself into? As she and Inuyasha left the inn by way of the window, leaping into the nearby tree and leaving Sango to get ready for bed. Yawning and snuggling into Inuyasha's arms, she thought fuzzily, 'First order of business...get her to stop calling me 'sensei'. Makes me sound old or something.' Within minutes, the pair was sleeping.
------------------------------------
(a/n: I almost stopped it here, but it's a boring ending....)
------------------------------------
Seeing that they were finally asleep, the green-eyed woman approached the tree and summoned her power, floating up to soundlessly hover near them. Smiling evilly, she reached into a pouch at her side and pulled out a pinch of glittering gold powder. Leaning forward carefully, she sprinkled it onto Inuyasha's closed eyelids. It gleamed for a second before being absorbed into his skin. He mumbled in his sleep, but didn't wake.
Ayako gazed at him for a second. 'Master Naraku didn't tell me to do this, but I must. He may feel that I don't need a soul, but he is wrong. I feel empty without it. And I'll get mine back. Oh, yes...' Smirking, she lowered herself and walked away, fading into the bushes. If one were standing a few feet away from her, they still would have had trouble hearing her next phrases, spoken aloud.
"The hanyou male will do my work for me. Perfect minion indeed, Naraku?"
And she faded away, chuckling quietly.
-------------------------------------
Inuyasha: Oi, wench! What'd she do to me?!?!
