Epilogue: When Things Change

The eyes watched the silver-haired person as he crossed the field, approaching his castle. They narrowed as the person in the bushes began to move as stealthily as possible, hoping to catch up to the other unnoticed. The distance was rapidly closing... twenty feet... ten... four... one!

With a snarl, the figure jumped out of the bushes...

...only to be caught by the collar by the other person, now grinning.

Inuyasha sighed and lifted the young boy to eye level. "Kanaye, haven't you learned anything yet?"

The sullen boy looked back at him. His hair was a solid ebony; his eyes were the gold of his father flecked with a touch of his mother's silver. His black ears had silver tips, and were currently twitching in disappointment. His outfit was, predictably, a red fire-rat kimono. Inuyasha had assented to wear the traditional dress of a lord, but he had instructed the castle tailors to make that outfit for the boy, claiming that he should live like a child, not like a lord. "I did what you said, Chichiue! I kept close to the ground, I moved slowly but silently-"

"Almost silently," Inuyasha amended. "About eight feet away, you stepped on a twig. Twelve feet back, you almost tripped on a rock. Not to mention the fact that I could smell your apprehension ever sense you've been following me."

Kanaye ceased his struggles to get free and relaxed in his father's grip. "I'm hopeless, huh?"

Inuyasha placed the pup on his shoulder. "You have a lot of time to get it right. Come on, let's find your mom. Dinner should be ready by now, seeing as how we're supposed to have company."

"Company, Chichi? Who's coming?" Kanaye leaned over his father's shoulder to look into his eyes.

"You'll see..."

It had been an impressive forty-four seasons since the group had taken their leave of Sesshoumaru's castle. After Kagome and Inuyasha had travelled north and formally proclaimed their rule, their group had split up. Sango and Miroku had travelled back to Senpai to tell Kunoichi and Ninsei of the happenings, after which they had taken off to parts unknown. Ninsei and Kunoichi had remained in Senpai, and were now aristocrats, ever since Akimoto Giichi had died and left his entire fortune to the two.

That would have been the last time any of them saw each other, if it wasn't for the unexpected visitor that had shown up the previous week.

***Flashback***

Kagome was walking in the gardens among the beautiful flowers of their kingdom when a shadow cast itself over her. Looking up, her eyes widened.

"Kirara?"

Sure enough, the neko youkai landed in front of her, transformed to her smaller state, and leapt into the hanyou's arms, nuzzling her face.

"Kirara, what are you doing here? I thought you would be with S-" she cut off as she saw something odd. There was a leather strap on Kirara's back, with three loops on top. Two were empty, but the third held a small scroll that was clearly marked "Kagome and Inuyasha".

Perplexed, Kagome pulled the scroll from the neko's back and unrolled it. After a few seconds of silent perusal, a grin spread across her face. She turned and dashed back to the castle and into her study, where she scrawled a quick note on the back of the scroll:

'Of course! We would be happy to have all of you! You have no idea how much we've been missing everyone, and we can't wait to see you again! One week from now is perfect!'

She signed the paper with the seal of the Northern Lands, which would keep the bearer of the letter from being apprehended, and walked back outside, where Kirara still stood, waiting. With another wide grin, she slipped the scroll back onto Kirara's back.

***End Flashback***

"Hahaue!" Kanaye suddenly exclaimed, vaulting from Inuyasha's shoulder toward his mother, who was standing in the entrance to the castle, beaming at the two.

He never got there.

A silver blur collided with his side and knocked him off course and into the bushes.

Sounds of a scuffle insued, and Kagome stepped to Inuyasha's side and looked into the bushes, amusement dancing in her eyes. Inuyasha muttered, "If he loses again..."

And indeed, Kanaye DID lose. Moments later, two figures rolled from the undergrowth, and the boy was pinned.

By a girl.

Hoo boy.

"Get OFF me!" Kanaye struggled and yelled, but she held tough, giggling happily.

"You lose again! You're too hot-headed for your own good! Once you admit that you might not be able to beat me, you'd have a better chance!"

"Leiko, that's not very nice," Kagome scolded. The girl looked up and sighed, rolling over and releasing Kanaye, who glared sullenly at her once he was back on his feet.

The children were twins, but they were nothing alike; the differences ran deeper than gender. While Kanaye's hair was black, Leiko's was the silver of her father. Her eyes were the same hue as her mother, with spots of gold; her ears were silver with black tips. Then, there was the difference in temperament. Kanaye was very reckless and arrogant, the spitting image of his father. Leiko had her own share of arrogance, but was confident in her abilities without being careless. She was not as strong as her brother, true, but what she lacked in strength she made up for in cunning, and was therefore able to best her brother whenever they sparred.

"It's not my fault that he's a baka," the girl responded.

"Am not!" Kanaye spat back, sulking.

"Too!"

"Not!"

"Too!"

"Not!"

"Not!"

"Too!"

Leiko folded her arms and smirked. Kanaye looked puzzled for a few moments, then blushed angrily. "Heyyyyy...."

Inuyasha rolled his eyes. 'I hope people don't start thinking that he's a reflection on me.'

Kagome glanced at him through the corners of her eyes. 'Why not? He is.'

'Feh! I'd never lose to a girl!'

'You almost lost to me once...'

'Did not!'

'Did too, Inuyasha.'

'Not!'

'Too.'

'Not!'

'Not.'

'Too!.... Ah, shit!'

When Kagome burst out laughing, the kids just stared at their parents, puzzled. Inuyasha was fuming with his arms crossed, sporting a spectacular flush.

After Kagome had finally tamed her giggles, the four entered the castle to wash up and change for the big rendezvous.

--------------------------------

Sesshoumaru quirked an eyebrow at the scroll that Rin held in her hand.

"It's today, Sesshoumaru-sama! Can't we go?"

"Rin," he began, "I still have quite a bit to do around here. I can not just prance off at any given opportunity."

"True..." she said. "I couldn't imagine *you* prancing anywhere.... but we COULD fly there! Oh, come on! It'll be fun!"

Sesshoumaru's eyebrow elevated even more. "Fun?"

Rin sighed and crossed her arms. "Yes. Fun. Or have you forgotten what that's like?"

He eyed her for quite a long while. She had grown into a beautiful girl of eighteen without losing the childlike innocence and caring that had pushed him to save her life all of those years ago. He absentmindedly (if you can imagine Sesshoumaru doing *anything* absentmindedly) touched the small vial in his pocket.

She was of a good age; it would have to be soon, if ever, that he gave her the vial and asked her...

"Sesshoumaru-sama? Hello?"

'Am I afraid?' he asked himself. 'No. I fear nothing. So then, why do I hesitate?'

Rin leaned forward. The Taiyoukai seemed to be lost in thought, something that she never saw.

It was this moment that Jaken chose to limp by the door; his left leg had never fully recovered from the shock of the mind-game. He took in the situation, blinked a few times, and immediately came to a very stupid conclusion.

"Wench! How dare you bewitch Lord Sesshoumaru with your heathenish ways! L- " Sesshoumaru snapped out of his thoughts, glanced at Jaken, glanced at Rin, who was still leaning over him, and came to a sudden decision.

But first, he took great care to toss Jaken a significant distance away.

Turning back to Rin, he withdrew the small vial of bluish-green potion. "Rin?"

Rin looked at him, the confusion on her face serving only to enhance her beauty. "Hai, Lord Sesshoumaru?"

"This potion causes the one who drinks it to live as long as the one who gives it. If you were to drink it, it would grant you the same longevity as myself."

Rin blinked and eyed the small bottle curiously. "Why?"

"Rin, I am asking you to take this potion and rule by my side as the Lady of the West."

The young woman just stared for a moment. Then, her mouth began to work but no sound escaped. Unable to produce words, she nodded, and tears filled her chocolate eyes. When happiness finally overwhelmed her, she dashed forward and pressed her face to Sesshoumaru's chest, sobbing gently, but with a brilliant smile on her face.

The Taiyoukai let out a long, slow, breath, then lifted the arm that wasn't holding the bottle and crossed it over her back, holding her close.

His eyes closed and he inhaled her scent. It was that of vanilla, both soothing and intoxicating.

'Thank you, Sage. You have done me a service that could not be matched, even in a time of war.'

------------------------------

"Leiko, your obi isn't tied right! Come here, let me do it! Inuyasha, tell your son to get OUT of that tree before he tears his clothes! Aah! Inuyasha, that doesn't mean go up there and get him yourself! You'll tear your OWN clothes! Kanaye, where's your other shoe? It's WHERE? Well, go get the other pair! Inuyasha, get those leaves out of your hair! His, too! Leiko, be STILL! Tying this thing isn't EASY you know! Do I smell something burning? Is something b-"

Inuyasha grabbed Kagome by her shoulders and maneuvered he into a chair. "Sit. Stay. Calm down. It's probably your brain that's burning anyway..."

Kagome's eyebrow twitched. "Once this is over... and I don't care about messing up your clothes.... You are going to get sat so hard that Kanaye will feel it."

Inuyasha and Kanaye winced while Leiko giggled.

A castle guard cried out in what first appeared to be alarm, then was recognized as a request for notification. After hearing the call, a servant entered the room, bowing.

"My Lord and Lady, two of your guests have arrived."

Kagome let out a quiet 'eep' while Inuyasha grinned. "Time to see how the monk's been doing."

Kagome 'eep'ed again. "Do I look ok? It's been eleven years, I-"

Inuyasha silenced her with a kiss while the twins made faces. "Koi, you look exactly the same... therefore, you're beautiful."

When the two emerged from the castle and stepped onto the grounds, their eyes temporarily widened. At first, there appeared to be a small army on their land... until Kagome realized that most of them wouldn't reach her waist.

"Kagome-chan!" A call came from the group and Sango suddenly came into view, striding toward the Taiyoukai.

"Sango-chan!" Kagome cried, dashing forward a bit more quickly and hugging the other young woman tightly. Feeling a bit of pressure on her midesection, Kagome glanced down at Sango's swollen belly and pointed at it.

Sango grinned. "It would seem that I haven't yet fulfilled my little promise to Miroku... but I'm pretty close.." She beckoned toward the army which Kagome could now see consisted of Miroku and children. Many children.

Inuyasha still stood in the doorway, while Leiko and Kanaye peeked shyly from behind his legs. With a sigh, he grabbed them both around the middle, leaping over to Kagome and depositing them behind her legs, where they continued to peer around at the newcomers. He then leapt over to greet Miroku (and pry kiddies from his neck).

It took a very short time for everyone to be introduced, but it would take much longer for the hanyous to remember the names... Sango and Miroku had six children in total, more than Kagome thought she could deal with at the time...

There was Kisho, the oldest, who was nine, then Kane, who was seven, Mika (Inuyasha wasn't too amused at her name [see name explanations at end]), six; Kiyoshi, four; Takara, three; and one-year old Zen, who was asleep in his father's arms.

Sango fawned over the twins for quite some time, who finally came out of hiding after seeing the abundance of playmates. Miroku walked over to stand beside Inuyasha as the children raced around the yard. "It's been a while, ne, Inuyasha?"

"Yeah. And I see you've been busy." He smirked at the monk, who shrugged.

"Can you blame me if I get carried away? They're good kids, though."

"I'd bet. How long until Kisho starts groping?"

Miroku looked at Inuyasha for a moment, a scandalized look on his face. "Why, Inuyasha, it amazes me that you would accuse me of teaching my son such a thing! Need I remind you, I AM a monk."

"Need I remind YOU, you ARE a hentai."

Miroku sighed. "Alas, there you have me." The two laughed together for a long while... at least until they heard a slight rustle, as if something were skimming the treetops. They looked around in apprehension for a moment... until they saw something that made them stare for quite a long time...

Kunoichi and Ninsei were seated atop a large floating pink bubble along with a young man that they didn't recognize, waving happily at the crowd. Waaaait a second... a floating pink bubble?

Kagome blinked. "Shippou-chan?"

Sure enough, as soon as the three hopped off, the bubble transformed into a kitsune with a soft 'pop'.

Of course, Shippou had grown into a young man of 17, leaving his childlike features (and height) far behind. He was now almost as tall as Inuyasha, and his hair had definitely grown. It was tied back into a mid-length ponytail. His eyes were no longer wide and youthful, but mature and wise. He had truly attained the beauty and majesty of a kitsune. Then...

"Kagome!"

Kagome sweatdropped as Shippou grabbed her, lifted her from the ground, and hugged her. 'Some things never change...'

Sango stared at the other man that had leapt from Shippou's back... and immediately wrapped him into a tight hug. "Kohaku!"

Sango and Miroku had left to continue exterminating and exorcising once they had split up with the others, leaving Kohaku with Kunoichi, Ninsei, and Shippou, claiming that it was too dangerous. Once they had so many children that it was dangerous for them as well, they decided to call their old group together, and the change in Kohaku was amazing.

He was now 21, and a very handsome man at that. It was rather unnerving to Sango, seeing her 'little' brother looking about her age, but she wasn't concerned. She couldn't ask him to set his life aside and stay with the group forever.

His future lay ahead, not in the hands of the adults.

Kunoichi, Ninsei, and Kohaku (after dislodging himself from Sango) approached the others, and it appeared that the couple had a new addition as well... a boy was latched tightly to the back of Ninsei's head. His ears were pointed, and his eyes were the emerald that he'd recieved from his mother. In all other aspects (except the claws), he resembled a normal human child. That is, if one were to ignore the tail that lashed behind him.

"I... hate... flying..." he muttered, while Ninsei and Kunoichi chuckled.

In a few minutes, after the panther demon had dislodged the little hanyou (who had been introduced as Taro) from his neck and he had fled to join the other children, the adults sat in the shade of a gigantic tree and watched the kids play.

Kunoichi leaned back and turned her face upward. "It's very lovely here..." she said, her eyes sparkling.

"It is. I'm very glad we-" Kagome was suddenly struck with how *young* the other woman looked. "Kunoichi... why do you look like you haven't aged a year?"

Miroku answered, "When we returned to Senpai, it appeared that Yuya had visited and given Ninsei a vial of that strange potion. She doesn't miss a trick..."

Kane tackled Kiyoshi, who immediately burst into tears. Taro, Leiko, and Kanaye looked on from the sidelines as if saying 'Baka ningens...' Shippou, watching from a tree, laughed.

Sango sighed. Ninsei smirked. "How do you do it? Taro is enough work for us!"

"It's easier when you have someone who's willing to work for you..." Sango cast an expectant gaze at Miroku, who looked at her blankly for a few seconds before catching the message in the glance.

"Oh. Ok..." He set off to give Kane a mild (but serious) scolding.

-------------------------------

Hours passed like minutes, but in time, all of the stories were told, and eleven years of separation were recounted as the sun waned. The children were littered across the yard, lying on the springy grass in various states of drowziness.

"You know, Lord Inuyasha, you may remember from our first meeting that I said the Northern Lands were my true home?"

Inuyasha nodded. He was leaning against the trunk of the huge tree, his arms crossed behind his head.

"Well, I've been talking with Kunoichi, and we've decided that we shall remain here... on these lands. I'm returning to the place of my birth."

Kagome squealed and hugged Kunoichi. "That's great! Now, we won't have to worry about being so far apart that we'll never see each other!"

Sango and Miroku shared a glance and grinned. "You know... we were thinking about staying as well. Your lands are beautiful, and I couldn't think of a better place for our children to grow up." Sango spoke up, her head leaning on Miroku's shoulder.

Miroku nodded in agreement. "And, of course, it is merely an added bonus that our best friends happen to be Taiyoukai..." Sango punched him lightly in the back of the head.

Shippou had come over to join the others once the entertainment (in the form of nine children) had petered out. "I guess I'll stay here too, then," he said, twirling a blade of grass between his fingers. "It's about time for me to find a mate now, and I guess this is a better place to live than any I could think of."

Inuyasha suddenly reached over and ruffled Shippou's hair. "You know, you used to really annoy me, Shippou. I think I could get used to this new you."

Miroku nudged Shippou's side. "And you should have no problem with the women, Shippou!" The kitsune blushed and refused to meet anyone's eyes.

"Well. Isn't this a comfortable scene."

"Eh?" Kagome (as well as the rest of the group) whirled around to see Sesshoumaru standing quite close to them, and at his side, Rin stood, a triumphant grin on her face. "Sesshoumaru? Rin? What are you doing here?" This was immediately followed by, "RIN!?!? You've GROWN!" Sango and Kagome leapt up to hug the girl while Inuyasha strode over to Sesshoumaru.

"So. You've let her talk you into coming, huh?"

"I assure you, Inuyasha, this wasn't of my free will."

"Sooo... she MADE you come. Oh, so much better..."

Sesshoumaru looked at his brother coolly for a second, then cracked the tiniest of smiles. "You have come a long way... brother." The last word was spoken without the scornful inflection that it had borne ever since Inuyasha had existed. As Sesshoumaru walked over to sit under the tree with the others, Inuyasha did the only thing that he could do.

He fainted.

Shippou immediately went over and began poking him with sticks and various objects.

While Kagome, Inuyasha, and Sango were welcoming the newcomers and Shippou was annoying Inuyasha's unconcious body (he was now flicking his ears), a servant had brought sake and began to serve it to everyone. Once every adult had a cup (except Inuyasha, who had awakened and was chasing Shippou around the grounds while trying not to wake the kids and screaming "Damn it, Shippou! I KNEW it was too good to last!"), Kagome spoke.

"A toast... to our future lives, our future families, and our present circumstances. A toast to where we came from, where we are now, and where we're going. A toast... to us!"

Sango and Miroku clinked their small cups together. "To us!"

Kunoichi and Ninsei went next. "To us!"

Sesshoumaru looked set on not participating, until he met Rin's eyes. Raising their glasses, they both said, "To us!"

Kohaku raised his cup, offered up a grin, and spoke, "To us!"

After the toast, there was a terrified squeal from the yard and Zen began to cry from his father's arms.

Inuyasha was holding Shippou by his ponytail while the kitsune was still futilely trying to run. The hanyou raised a fist when-

"OSUWARI!"

A stream of curses flowed to her ears and Kagome grinned in reflection. Everything had changed so much...

... But there were some things that never would.
