Chapter 25: Overcome

Kunoichi felt out with her power when she reached to door to her room. It appeared that Ninsei was right; there was nothing there. With a grunt, she half-carried Chiaki into the room and placed her gently on the bed. After checking that Shippou was safely behind her, she notched an arrow and let fly at the spot directly over the door.

When the purified arrow lodged in the wood, it flared even brighter. Waves of pinkish energy seemed to waft down, forming a curtain-like blockade of power. This done, Kunoichi sank to her knees and dropped her face into her hands.

Shippou put a tiny hand on her shoulder. "He'll be okay! He is a demon, after all!"

Kunoichi didn't look up, but a sob tore from her body before she could surpress it.

Shippou eyed her for a second, then realized, in a very mature manner, that there was nothing that he could say that would comfort her now.

He settled for curling up beside her, sighing. He whispered, in a tone that was too quiet for Kunoichi to pick up, "Kagome... Inuyasha... Come back soon..."

-----------------------------

Ninsei held his staff aloft as he leapt into the room, prepared for anything.

Well, almost anything.

As soon as he entered, the rug that had been beneath him was violently jerked from under his feet. He stumbled before quickly regaining his bearings and quickly surveyed the room.

At first, it appeared to be completely empty. There was no furniture, no decorations... There weren't even any sources of light to help his vision. Not that he needed it, being a youkai, but still...

As he looked around, he caught sight of many footprints on the ground. Though they were everywhere, constantly overlapping each other and making it impossible for him to tell one Sai's tracks from the other. They seemed, however, to be concentrated in the very middle.

With a sick feeling of dread in his stomach, he raised his eyes and gasped.

Kohaku was suspended from the ceiling. His chain sickle had been looped around his torso and through a thick metal hoop. Although his eyes were closed, Ninsei could smell no blood, and he could hear the boy's deep breathing.

Ninsei swallowed in an attempt to moisten his throat. It seemed to be entirely too easy. The boy was unharmed, aside from the fact that he was out cold, and the room seemed to be completely empty. There was no sign of footprints forming from nowhere on the ground.

With one movement of his staff, the ground swelled under him like a rapidly forming mountain. The mound of sand pushed him upward until he was level with Kohaku. He wrapped an arm around the boy's torso and carefully unhooked the sickle, being careful not to cut himself or the kid. When Kohaku was safely in his arms, he allowed the sand to lower them both to the ground.

As soon as they landed, Kohaku's eyelids began to flutter. With a low groan, he opened his eyes and placed a palm to his head. "Wha..."

Ninsei spared him a fleeting grin before saying, "Come on, Kohaku. We have to get out of here. Now!" He grabbed the boy by the wrist but he refused to move.

As Ninsei turned impatient eyes on the boy once more, he noticed that the boy's gaze was wandering all over the room. It seemed an eternity before the boy snapped, "Why did you take me down?"

Ninsei dropped his arm and stared. "You were in danger! I came here to rescue you!"

"I was safe! They can't lose contact with the castle or they die! My father... he taught me about them... All I had to do was get off of the ground!" He suddenly seemed to notice that the ground that he was standing on was made completely of sand. "Oh..."

"What now?" Ninsei had dropped his original exasperated attitude. "What's wrong?"

"This is bad... Now all they have to do is put a handful of sand in their pocket or something and they can do whatever they want... You have to turn it back!"

"If I turn it back, we'll have no idea where they are!"

"We have no idea where they are now..." Kohaku stated, glancing warily around the room.

Ninsei sighed, defeated. "Fine..." Moments later, the original flooring was returned. "Now let's get out of here!" He took hold of Kohaku's wrist once more, and this time, the boy didn't struggle. The two ran like mad, until they reached the wall that Ninsei had created....

Actually, they didn't reach the wall. Halfway down the hall, both slammed into something leathery. Something...

Alive...

"Sai..." Kohaku whispered fearfully.

Ninsei returned the boy's chain sickle. "Get ready to f-" His statement was halted as he felt something part the air, approaching his chest. He brought his staff up quickly, blocking whatever it was with a 'clang'.

Kohaku let out a yell as he released his chain sickle at the space where the attack had seemed to come from.

The weapon clattered to the ground, having sliced through only empty space.

'This will not be good...' Ninsei thought to himself, as he shoved Kohaku behind him and took up a ready stance once more.

----------------------------------

Suikai stopped her attack suddenly and allowed the orbs to sink from sight, re-entering her palms and causing them to glow with a faint pink light. Her violet eyes traveled to Inuyasha, and she let out a taunting chuckle.

'Her memories of you are amusing, hanyou...'

Inuyasha's claws twitched and he snarled, "Get out of her mind!"

Suikai chuckled again.

Then she opened her mouth and uttered one word in Kagome's voice.

"Osuwari."

Inuyasha felt the tug of the rosary, but it was nothing like when Kagome subdued him. When Kagome did it, she knew, deep down, that she didn't want to hurt him. Suikai felt no such sentiments.

Which is why he thudded to the ground with a 'crunch' and lay temporarily motionless.

"Inuyasha!" Miroku exclaimed. "How dare you!" He turned his eyes back to Suikai, who had taken Kagome's form and was doubled over in laughter.

Inuyasha forced himself up on his elbows and rolled onto his back. "That... wasn't... too bad..." His eyes were shut tightly and the rosary still pulsed.

The laughter abruptly stopped. Suikai had resumed her own form once more. She looked at Inuyasha with contempt. 'You allow her to have such power over you? Well. Don't worry. It would be far too easy to defeat you if I were to continue to use that little power...' She held a hand out to her side. Sango's brown shone briefly in her eyes before a large boomerang appeared in the extended hand. 'Interesting...'

Inuyasha had managed to climb to his feet and was staring at Suikai with extreme malice. "You're gonna fucking DIE, bitch!"

Suikai sighed, then raised the weapon. "HIRAIKOTSU!" she cried in Sango's voice, and the boomerang went hurtling toward the two males. Both dodged it effortlessly.

When it returned to Suikai's hand, she dropped it to the ground. It vanished, and she sighed again. 'Such a useless weapon, this. Very powerful, indeed, but not nearly fast enough to bring down the agile enemy. That wasn't a compliment...' she added.

Miroku glared at the woman. "Inuyasha, she's toying with us! She's seeing if she can break us down! Don't let her!"

Inuyasha scoffed. "Take your own damn advice, Miroku! I'm fine!"

Suikai looked thoughtful for a second. A bow and a quiver of arrows appeared on her back. She readied the weapon with a sinister grin and prepared to release an arrow. 'Anything they can do, I can do better...' She fired, aiming directly for Inuyasha.

He jumped straight upward, skilled with dodging pretty much anything... But he wasn't prepared for the arrow to break its course after he jumped and come hurtling back toward him. It was a poor shot, being nothing but an afterthought of Suikai's, so it only grazed his side. The hanyou came back to earth and sneered.

"Is that the best you've got?"

"Inuyasha, don't...' Miroku hissed, but Inuyasha was already too deep in his taunting to care.

"So, you're too scared to fight us with your real powers, huh? You have to steal them from Kagome and Sango? Pathetic!"

Suikai's smirk evaporated and she narrowed her eyes at him. 'What was that?'

"You heard me! You're a pathetic excuse for a youkai! You probably don't even have any active powers of your own besides this mind thing!"

Suikai stamped her foot, a very Kagome-like motion. 'If it's enough to destroy you, I need nothing else!'

Miroku watched the exchange with awe. It looked as if Suikai hadn't been expecting this... not only did she get the powers of the girls, but also their sentiments. Despite the situation, he found himself wondering if she slapped as hard as Sango...

"I bet you wouldn't survive for one second in a real fight!"

"What do you mean, a real fight?"

Inuyasha's eyes widened. She had spoken aloud... This meant that Kagome had to be close to the surface! Now if only he could get her angry enough to falter, just for a second. "Ha! I mean what you think I mean! This is just some fancy illusion thing! It's no more powerful than having a dream!"

"SHUT UP! You don't know what you're talking about!"

"I know exactly what I'm talking about!"

Suikai's expression seemed to freeze for a split second, and she gaped wordlessly for a moment, before her form changed into that of Kagome. "Inuyasha!" The girl gasped, temporarily free from Suikai's power. "How did you know?"

Inuyasha scratched his head. "Know what?"

"That anger weakened her hold over us, baka!"

"Oh, that. I just figured that either she'd lose her concentration on you or sit me into oblivion..."

"It not time for jokes, Inuyasha! I feel her coming back! You have to kill her!"

Inuyasha gaped at her. "I can't! She said she'd take you with her!"

"We... Sango and I... we've agreed that it's for the best... We love you guys too much to want to you stay here forever! Get it over with, already!" A lone tear seeped from the corner of her eye - and she lost control.

Suikai glared at the males. 'Well. That surely won't happen again.'

Inuyasha and Miroku were still disbelievingly debating what Kagome had said. Was it true? Were the girls really willing to sacrifice themselves just so they could escape unharmed?

Yes...

It was true...

Because either of the guys would do the same for them.

Suikai started forward, to inevitably launch into another attack. Miroku saw it coming, however, and slashed his staff upward. Suikai was trapped in a wind vortex, the same that Miroku had used when Inuyasha had been full demon.

Suikai just regarded him with her purple eyes. She didn't even flinch as she reached one hand toward the barrier and the sharp edges of the seemingly solid wind nicked her fingers.

'Well? Will you kill me?'

Inuyasha opened his mouth to cry out an affirmative, but the words died on his tongue. He switched his gaze to Miroku, and the monk seemed equally lost. Finally, the hanyou brought himself to speak.

"No."

Suikai's eyes momentarily widened. 'You.. you said...'

"No." Miroku affirmed, giving Inuyasha an enlightened smile. "If killing you means killing the girls, we won't. I'd rather die than live with something like that on my conscience." He released her, and she just stared.

'You love them so much... that you would relinquish your lives?'

Both nodded.

Suikai laughed harshly and reformed the balls of energy on her palms. 'Have it YOUR way!' She launched herself forward, grinning maliciously. 'Die!'

Inuyasha tensed for a second, then he allowed his muscles to relax. Miroku did the same. With their arms at their sides, they watched as Suikai came closer, closer...

They didn't move, not even when the echoing protests of Kagome and Sango began to echo through the room. "Inuyasha, MOVE!" "Miroku!"

She came within striking distance, her arms outstretched and elated laughter bubbling through her lips.

Then...

Darkness.
