Chapter 17: An Unexpected Turn of Events

Sesshoumaru scoffed over the inert body of his half-brother. 'Weakling,' he thought. 'Too weak to control himself and too weak to own up to his own problems...' Here, something strange happened. Tenseiga gave a pulse at his side...

And so did Tokijin.

It seemed that both of the swords felt that they needed to be used, and they were going out of their way to make Sesshoumaru decide between them.

"I could kill him now," Sesshoumaru thought aloud, "But there is no honor in slaying a completely defenseless opponent. Yet, I refuse to heal him, as he is my sworn enemy...And yet..." The smell of Inuyasha's blood was stirring something within him. Even though he loathed his brother, he was quickly becoming agitated by the thought of leaving him there, defenseless and dying...

"Milord? Lord Sesshoumaru?" Jaken emerged from the trees and waddled to his side. "What is that awful scent of- blech!" Jaken spotted Inuyasha lying on the ground and took a step back. "Why... that is your half-brother, is it not, Lord Sesshoumaru? Will you slay him now?"

Sesshoumaru didn't look up at his retainer. He posed a question to the wind. "Is it dignified to slay one who is without protection?"

Jaken looked up, puzzled. "Are you asking me, Milord? Well, I don't think that it matters, as long as you get the job done..."

Sesshoumaru continued to voice his thoughts aloud. "Would it be an adequate display of my superiority if I were to kill him after he was nearly slain by another?"

Jaken stared at the Taiyoukai for a moment, confused beyond all belief. 'Why is Lord Sesshoumaru acting this way?' he wondered. 'What could be going on inside that head of his?'

Something was beginning to change inside of Sesshoumaru...something that was sparked by the small girl named Rin. He no longer felt the overbearing urge to kill his brother...as a matter of fact, he had forgotten his motives for doing so in the first place. He no longer needed Tetsusaiga...he had Tokijin. He no longer desired the Northern Lands...they were not as magnificent as his own at present. He no longer wished for Inuyasha's mate...their bond was far too strong to be broken and it would jeopardize his current situation...

Sesshoumaru looked up and glanced into a pack of trees. "Ah, Un," he called. From the trees emerged the two-headed youkai that was Rin's transportation. He pointed to his brother's form and began to give instruction.

------------------------------

Kirara landed softly in the clearing and Ninsei slid from her back, holding himself up with his staff. Kunoichi was nowhere in sight...

The others slid from Kirara as well. "I could have sworn that that was a purified arrow..." Sango mused, stepping forward. Shippou nodded from her shoulder. Ninsei was about to suggest that they look around when his ears picked up a rustling noise from the trees to his left.

Whirling as quickly as he could with his injured leg, he faced the sound with apprehensive eyes. He tensed, ready if a threat should emerge, but relaxed and almost collapsed when the young girl came into view, Kagome's backpack over her shoulders and a bow clasped tightly in her hand.

"Kunoichi..." Ninsei whispered, not daring to believe his eyes. There was no way that such a thing could have occurred.... How?

Kunoichi looked up at the sound of her name, and her bow clattered to the ground as her eyes welled with tears. "Ninsei!" She ran forward hugged him fiercely, knocking him back into Kirara's side. With the support of the neko-youkai behind him, Ninsei folded the girl into an embrace.

Sango smiled faintly, happy for the couple, but her smile faded as she considered the situation. Kunoichi had been revived...and the only person they knew that was capable of that was...

"Kunoichi-san, how is it that you were restored?" Sango asked, stepping forward.

Kunoichi pulled away from Ninsei with a slight flush and answered, "I'm not quite sure how. There was a youkai there with me when I awoke, however."

"What did he look like?" 'Please don't be him, please...' Sango silently entreated.

"He looked kind of like Inuyasha...only older and he had marks on his face."

"Sesshoumaru!" Sango hissed to herself. Shippou quavered on her shoulder and spoke her fears aloud.

"What if he went after Inuyasha, Sango? Then, he'll be defenseless...and he's hurt!"

"I know, Shippou-chan, I know."

Ninsei cleared his throat politely. "Who is this Sesshoumaru? An enemy of yours?"

"Hai," Sango answered. "Or rather an enemy of Inuyasha's. He's his half brother. There has always been enmity between the two, but it has worsened due to Kagome's transformation among other things... We have to go after him!"

Ninsei, Shippou and Kunoichi climbed on to Kirara while Sango opted to run. "Go quickly! Tell Kagome what's going on, she needs to know!" In a few seconds, the fire-cat was out of sight, leaving Sango to make her own slower way back to Kagome.

------------------------

Kagome had finally managed to halt her tears for a while. She was staring determinedly at a rock to her left, trying to force her body not to allow tears to fall. She was doing quite a good job of it, too, only looking up when she heard a faint voice call her name.

"Miroku-sama?" she queried, standing and going to his side.

The monk winced and pulled himself to a sitting position. "I am quite sick of unconciousness..."

Kagome laughed before she could stop herself. "I'm glad you're all right. We all are."

Miroku suddenly seemed to realize that he wasn't dead, for he glanced at his right hand and frowned. "Does this mean that-"

"Hai. Inu...Inuyasha defeated him..."

'Ah, bad subject," Miroku thought, reading the saddened look on her face. To distract her from her thoughts, he reached down and slowly unwrapped the purple covering from his right hand. Once he was finished, he let it fall, gazing raptly at the gradually disappearing bruise in the center of his hand. The bruise stretched to the very edges of his palm, reminding him of how close to death he'd been.

Flexing his fingers, Miroku smiled and was about to say something when Kirara burst onto the scene and Kunoichi leapt from her back.

Despite her heavy heart, Kagome was overjoyed at seeing her apprentice alive again. "Kunoichi-san!" she cried, hugging the girl.

"Lady Kagome!" Ninsei called from Kirara's back. "Sango told us to tell you that Inuyasha's brother, Sesshoumaru, may be after his life!"

"Nani?" Kagome's briefly cheerful mood dissolved into her downcast mask once more. "Sesshoumaru?"

"Hai." It was Kunoichi who spoke this time. "Sango said that he revived me, but I don't know how such a thing is possible."

"It was the Tenseiga." Kagome explained. "It was made from his father's fang, just like the Tetsusaiga, but it has the power to heal and bring the dead back to life."

Kunoichi nodded slowly. Just then, Sango burst into the clearing, winded. "I tried to see if I could track him, but no luck. Can you smell either him or Inuyasha, Kaogme?"

This was when Kagome knew something was amiss. "I can't smell much of anything...I can't even smell the blood on you, Sango-chan! Inuyasha must have done something so that I wouldn't be able to find him..."

"It is plausible," Ninsei said. "However, Shippou and I can track both of them, if need be."

Sango thought, then shook her head slowly. "The majority of us are in no shape to fight. Ninsei's leg is broken, Miroku is completely drained, and I, myself, am injured, though I would fight nonetheless. We would be slaughtered easily, if Sesshoumaru wanted it so."

"You're right," Kagome sighed.

Ninsei looked around at them defiantly. "So what is our course of action, then? We can't just give up!"

Miroku pushed himself to his feet and stood shakily. "We're not giving up. Just call it...pooling our resources. The best thing to do would be to go back to Senpai, for now. The ones who are well enough will take up the search for Inuyasha while the others will recover and follow soon after."

Everyone voiced their approval on the plan. It would be a long trip back to Senpai, seeing as how Ninsei, Miroku, and Kunoichi were the only ones who could fit on Kirara, and Kagome was the only one who could run for a long distance. But they would get there... eventually...

'Just don't let it be too late,' Kagome thought desperately. 'Inuyasha...where are you?'

----------------------------

Inuyasha cracked his eyes open and immediately wished he hadn't. Lantern light flooded his eyeballs and seemed to burn them. With a groan, he tried to roll onto his stomach, but was unable to make any of his limbs comply. He released another groan, this one of frustration. Then came a voice from the other side of the room.

"Stop your squirming. You will injure yourself further."

A mental spark went off in Inuyaha's mind. "Sesshou...maru..." he said, unable to push his voice above a hoarse whisper. He tried once more to move and was halted by a deep growl from Sesshoumaru.

"Idiot. I said don't move. Do you wish to bleed to death?"

Inuyasha's muscles relaxed and he began turning the situation over in his mind. 'Okay... I'm in Sesshoumaru's castle... I'm human... I can't fucking MOVE.... SHIT!'

"I smell your fear, Inuyasha. Do you fear me...or death?"

Even Inuyasha's human ears picked up the change in the way those words were spoken. They hid no subliminal messages of malice or bad intent. They were just plainly spoken, emotionless as usual. "Wha...what d'you want?"

Sesshoumaru snorted and Inuyasha could hear him rising to his feet. "Rest yourself. Your mate will arrive soon."

Inuyasha's eyes popped open and he watched Sesshoumaru's retreating back despite the agony that was flooding his head due to the sudden light exposure. 'Did he just...what the... What the HELL is going on here?!?!?!'

Before he had a lot of time to consider his situation and any possible escape, he detected a body's entrance into the room. "Here, drink this," came a woman's gentle voice.

Inuyasha scowled. "I would if I could MOVE..."

A chuckle came from the woman. "That is to be expected. I bandaged you up the best I could, but you're still only human..." Her voice was mildly teasing, and Inuyasha would have snarled if he'd had the energy. "Come on, sit up and drink!" she demanded. Inuyasha, his eyes tightly shut again, heard the clink as she placed something on a low table beside the down bed that he lay in. Then, he felt a hand slipping under his back, slowly easing him into a sitting position.

'She's pretty strong...' he thought. 'She must be youkai...' To the woman, he asked, rather rudely, "Who the hell are you?"

The woman giggled. "If you would open your eyes, you would be able to tell."

Inuyasha did, squinting against the light. The woman looked to be in her early thirties... she had an elegant, well-bred look about her. 'I...I recognize her!'
