He suddenly felt a shooting agony as if someone had shoved a red-hot poker through the palm of his hand all the way up to his shoulder. Trying to choke back a scream, he slumped forward, pressing his forehead to the cool ground and panting slightly. Soon, however, the pain ebbed, and he was able to shove himself to his feet with his staff. Wondering at the sudden turn of events, he gazed inquiringly at his cursed hand. What he saw shocked him so badly that he dropped his staff to the ground in horror.
Wisps of black wind were escaping from his palm, despite the sealing power of the prayer beads. As he watched, said beads began to move even more rapidly, practically shaking up and down his arm. Then, tragedy struck.
Each of the bluish beads shattered in its own miniature explosion, scattering the pieces in all directions. A few shards sprayed into Miroku's face, drawing thin lines of blood, but that was the least of his worries.
The kazaana had burst open and was producing gale-force winds. For the first time, Miroku felt the pull of the curse as if he was on the other side of it. It seemed to be tugging at his very insides, centering his mass in the direction of his right hand. Pain, now white-hot, was coursing through every nerve in his body. As Miroku felt his feet sinking into the ground, he followed his only course of action. First, he struggled to aim his kazaana straight upwards.
Second, he voiced a scream of mortal terror.
-----------------------------
Inuyasha moved like liquid. Each of his movements seemed to be graceful, but at the same time, held profound power. Unfortunately, even with his transformation on his side, Naraku was still holding his own.
From the trees, Ninsei watched in awe. Inuyasha's skill level was enormous! But still...Naraku's back was to him...
Uttering a cry, Ninsei raced forward, his staff raised. Naraku glanced over his shoulder with a look of boredom and he began to dodge, but Inuyasha was much quicker. Leaping over Naraku, Inuyasha landed on the balls of his feet directly in front of Ninsei, who stopped, confused.
"Inuyasha? What are you...what are you doing?" It was at this moment that Ninsei got a good look at Inuyasha's face and took in the changes in his features. 'He's...full youkai?' His look suddenly changed from one of respect to one of fear. "Do you...do you not remember me?"
Inuyasha's eyes narrowed. "This is MY fight. Stay out of it or die."
Ninsei shrunk back. "I just wished to give you some assistance. I-" He never got to finish. Inuyasha drew back an arm and slashed viciously across the panther youkai's chest. With a choked scream, Ninsei was thrown backward into the trees, landing on his back with a dull thud. With a jolt, he realized that one of his leg bones was shattered, completely useless. A rushing sound filled his ears and his head dropped to the ground as he lost all awareness.
Inuyasha flicked Ninsei's blood from his claws and turned back to Naraku. "Where were we?"
As of now, the two were facing each other across the desecration caused by their battle. There were fallen trees everywhere, and pits littered the ground where each of the combatants had been knocked numerous times.
'Fucking BASTARD!' Inuyasha's mind yelled, his blood pumping fiercely. 'If is wasn't for that damn jewel, he wouldn't stand a chance! Of course,' he amended, 'he doesn't stand a chance NOW!'
But yet, some part of his mind yelled that he was wrong, that Naraku could defeat him if he realized that Inuyasha was making the situation desperate. This almost nonexistent part screamed at him to get help.
Inuyasha's youkai side snarled at it. 'HELP? Who the FUCK do I look like? Ka-?' His thoughts broke off. He was on the verge of uttering Kagome's name when he felt something like a connection in the back of his conciousness. Frowning even deeper, he examined it closer, and realized it for what it was.
"My BITCH!" he muttered.
"What's that, Inuyasha? Calling for help now, are we?" Naraku had been studying the hanyou-gone-youkai since their last attack had ended. Naraku's outfit was almost completely shredded and claw-marks marred his skin. Inuyasha's fire-rat haori was torn as well, and as Naraku watched, he shed it completely, as well as his white underkimono, throwing them aside carelessly.
"I don't need anyone's help to defeat you. You're MINE!" Inuyasha opened up the part of his brain that he'd just realized was there and began to pull forth what he needed. Raw power flooded his senses and his bluish-green slit-like pupils faded to a brilliant silver. "Game over, Naraku!" he hissed, launching himself forward, easily five times as fast as ever before.
(a/n: That'll be explained...be PATIENT....)
--------------------------------
Kagome and Sango tore through the woods, pushing apart the brush and heading in the direction of Miroku's shrieks. Neither talked, afraid of having to face the truth about what was happening. They had nearly reached the clearing when Kagome stopped dead, staring straight ahead.
"Ka...Kagome-chan?" Sango stopped as well, gasping for breath.
"Inu...yasha..." Kagome whispered.
"What? Is he..."
Kagome emphatically shook her head. "He's...he's in my mind. He's...looking for something. I- AH!" The hanyou miko's eyes suddenly burst wide open and flooded with brilliant white light. Sango took a few steps backward, looking wary.
It was a few seconds before Kagome blinked hard and slowly opened her eyes. Sango gasped. "Are you alright?"
Kagome's eyes were a dull gray instead of their usual vibrant silver. Her pupils were nonexistent. It was almost as if she had been struck blind. Kagome looked at Sango, puzzlement obvious on her face. "I...I feel...strange..." Suddenly, she punched a fist into her hand. "Inuyasha must have borrowed my essence! But I didn't even know he could..." She sucked in air sharply at her realization. "He's full youkai! I bet our bond is stronger now!"
"Borrowed your essence?"
"Hai. When a mate is in trouble, and the other is too far away to help, he or she can tap into the powers of the mate who is away and borrow them for a time. I never asked many questions, since Inuyasha told me that neither of us could probably ever pull it off."
"Doesn't that mean that you're defenseless?"
Kagome nodded. "But the only one left now is Naraku, and if Inuyasha has my essence AND he is full youkai... Naraku doesn't stand a chance in hell. Still, I'm worried. I'm going to him." Kagome whirled around and set back off in the direction of Inuyasha and Naraku's battle. With most of her abilities gone, she had a job cut out for her, finding it more and more difficult to keep her legs moving at top speed.
After watching Kagome disappear, Sango continued to run in the direction of Miroku's yells. Shortly, she skidded into the clearing and let a frightened sound escape her throat.
Miroku was standing in a five-foot deep crater, holding the kazaana straight up in the air.
"Miroku-san!" Sango shouted, beginning to approach him.
Miroku's eyes snapped open. "Sango-san! Get the hell out of here!"
"I won't! You promised me!"
"Promised..." Miroku eyed Sango with a sad, faraway look in his eyes, then immediately tried to look commanding. "You have to leave! I don't want you to get hurt!"
"What makes you think I want to live without you?"
Miroku stared at Sango for a long while. She continued. "I have known that this day would come, but I was never afraid! Either Inuyasha would slay Naraku in time, or we die...together." Sango strode forward, slid down the side of the crater, and approached Miroku, sliding her arms around his waist and burying her face in his shoulder. "Please..." she whispered. "Let me stay."
"Sango," Miroku began, his voice husky with emotion. "I...I don't want you to die..."
"Don't be so selfish!" Sango snapped. "Who cares what you want? I want to stay by your side!"
Miroku had been staring at a spot over Sango's head. Now, he looked down into her brimming eyes, shimmering brown pools of tenderness. He felt tears sting the corners of his eyes as well. Ever so slowly, he raised his left arm and placed it over her shoulders. Sango, her face once more buried in Miroku's shoulder, began to audibly sob.
"Sango..." Miroku whispered. "Whatever happens... I love you. Thank you, koibito."
Sango looked up at the familiar lover's term. Before she could stop herself, she had kissed him full on the lips. The two prepared to meet death just that way, oblivious to the storm of the void over their heads.
------------------------------
Naraku grunted in pain as Inuyasha's long claws penetrated his shoulder and dug almost completely in. Twisting in a reflexive action, he pulled free and landed on his feet, scowling.
'What happened?' he asked himself furiously. 'How did he get so powerful?' Naraku had filled their battle area with miasma, but it didn't seem to have an effect on Inuyasha at all. The hanyou turned youkai was unscathed, interesting because Naraku had injured him early on in the fight. Naraku, on the other hand, had several wounds. None of them were serious, but he was quickly getting frustrated.
Inuyasha flexed the claws on one hand, the sinew cracking and popping as he prepared for another attack. "What's the matter, Naraku? Scared?"
Naraku smirked, but it was just for show. Inside, he didn't feel like smirking at all. "Not particularly, Inuyasha. However, I would like to know why you have no wounds. And where did this power come from? I daresay that you aren't this powerful."
Inuyasha snarled a curse. "That doesn't concern you."
It was then that Naraku smelled it. Blood was on the air. It was that of a hanyou...a female hanyou. 'Hmm, interesting. His wench is injured.' Then, he put two and two together. "You have borrowed the essence of your mate. And you are forcing your injuries into her so that you don't feel them."
Inuyasha stood silently for a moment, then said, "I SAID that doesn't concern you. Now, DIE!" He leapt forward once more, lightening quick. Naraku managed to barely dodge the attack, which was rippling with youkai as well as miko power. Without looking over his shoulder at the maniacal Inuyasha, he rushed through the forest. If he couldn't defeat Inuyasha, at least he could hurt him emotionally...
By killing his mate...
--------------------------
Kagome ran through the trees, painfully aware of how the stones and sticks hurt her suddenly sensitive feet. She had just caught a whiff of Inuyasha on the air (not a strong one, because her powers were diminished), and she knew that she was nearly there. Then, suddenly, her senses became fogged. Her nose and eyes burned and she could barely see because her eyes were watering. Her skin tingled. 'This is the sensation caused by the miasma!' Kagome realized. She looked around frantically, but the air around her was clear. "Why do I feel this, then?" she choked aloud.
Another shock came when she felt a searing pain across her chest, back, and cheek. She could feel her own warm blood begin to flow. 'What's going on here?!?!' she thought frantically.
Then she heard crashing through the brush. By the time she'd whirled to face it, the figure already had her arms pinned at her side.
Naraku pressed his lips to her ear and spoke, causing her to recoil. "We shall wait here for your mate...and I will kill you while he watches. His emotional grief should injure him more than my attacks ever could."
Kagome's mind was racing. 'Did he just say that he can't hurt Inuyasha?' Thinking of her mysterious wounds, she realized what must be happening. She couldn't give it much thought, however, as Inuyasha burst from the trees and glared over her shoulder at Naraku.
"Release my mate, Naraku," he hissed.
"I don't think so, Inuyasha," Naraku answered, trailing a sharp claw against Kagome's cheek. A stifled cry escaped her throat as he traced an already existing wound. Powerless to do anything but watch, Kagome kept her eyes trained on Inuyasha.
A feral growl escaped Inuyasha's mouth and his lips curled upward, baring his razor-sharp fangs. Naraku looked slightly taken aback. 'This seems to be having the opposite of the desired effect! The reaction that Inuyasha is having is not that of concern, but anger! Would he kill the girl just to get to me?' As he thought, he stared at Inuyasha, who suddenly-
Wasn't there anymore...
Naraku felt Inuyasha's breath on the back of his neck and tried to turn to face him. Way too late. Inuyasha clamped his hands around Naraku's neck and lifted him away from Kagome. Shifting his hands, he held Naraku in front of him, one hand clasped around the front of his throat.
Naraku glared down at Inuyasha. Swiftly bending his legs, he kicked against Inuyasha's chest and attempted to wrench himself free. Kagome doubled over in pain, but Inuyasha's grip never weakened. "Stop huring her, bakayarou."
"It's you that hurts her!" Naraku gasped. The pressure of Inuyasha's hand on his neck was becoming unbearable.
"Never." Inuyasha's hand flexed and he threw Naraku across the battlefield. Naraku prepared to land and recover a little from his injuries, but Inuyasha had anticipated this move. Before Naraku hit the ground, Inuyasha was already there, waiting. He thrust his claws upward and caught the hanyou directly in the middle of his back.
Naraku's world was crashing down around him. Inuyasha's attack had shattered the middle section of his spine, rendering his lower body useless. Inuyasha dropped him to the ground, his mind chanting at him.
'Kill, blood, murder, death, slaughter...'
He peered closely and spotted the shard of the Shikon no Tama in Naraku's forehead.
'Shred, gore, dead flesh...'
He leaned over the prostrate Naraku, who showed fear clearly on his face.
'Destroy, prey, make him suffer...'
Inuyasha reached a hand forward and rested the tip of his claw just above the spot in the middle of Naraku's eyebrows. "N...no..." Naraku choked. "You...you couldn't..."
'Pierce, stab, wound, punish, kill, kill, kill, KILL, KILL!!!!!!!!!!!!'
Kagome screwed her eyes shut and flattened her ears tightly to her head. The howl that emitted from Naraku's form penetrated the night. When she finally cracked her eyes open again, Inuyasha stood in front of her, his hands dripping blood.
Kagome chanced a look behind him and immediately wished that she hadn't. The body of Naraku was desecrated, bits of it were strewn everywhere, the flesh shredded without mercy. 'Oh, gods,' Kagome chanted in her mind. 'Oh, gods, Oh, gods...'
She finally focused on Inuyasha, or more precisely, his hands. In one, he held the final shard of the Shikon Jewel. In the other, he held a soul.
Naraku's soul.
As she watched, he closed his hand over it. She felt a draining feeling, the same as she had felt when he'd done anything that required miko power. His palm glowed with the same energy that flowed from the Sora-Ki. A cracking sound reached her ears, followed by a shattering noise. Inuyasha opened his hand slowly. Naraku's soul, as frozen as his heart, had shattered in his hand. The pieces evaporated into a black vapor that vanished slowly. Kagome tried, but couldn't sense his prescense.
Finally.
He was dead.
She started to breathe a sigh of relief when she noticed that Inuyasha was still glaring at her with his angry youkai eyes. He approached her slowly, his body swaying with that powerful grace. She shrank from his advances, pressing her back to a tree. He followed and reached to her neck. With a small tinkling sound, she realized that he had broken the chain that held the other part of the Shikon no Tama! As she watched, he pressed the last shard to it and used her own miko powers to fuse them together. It was complete. And...and youkai Inuyasha had it!
"OSU-" she began, but she never got to finish the word. Inuyasha had roughly pressed his mouth to hers. She whimpered in fright, then in pain as his fangs drew blood from her lips. The taste of her blood seemed to drive him even deeper into a frenzy and he pressed himself even more firmly against her.
Kagome's mind was whirling. She didn't want him like this! But yet...her youkai half did. Her emotions were battling wildly, at least until fear won out. There was no telling what he'd do-
One of Inuyasha's blood-stained claws began to slice through Kagome's shirt, drawing a thin line of blood directly between her breasts.
Correction: There was a very good idea of what he'd do.
---------------------------
(a/n: This happens right when Inuyasha takes Kagome's essence.)
Shippou was the first to realize that the barrier around himself, Kohaku, and Kirara was weakening. "Hey, Kirara! Do you see that?"
With a flash of pink light, it disappeared completely and the kitsune squealed. "Now we're defenseless! But why'd the spell drop? Did something happen to Kagome?"
A groan from Kohaku silenced Shippou's worries. "Wha...what happened?" Kohaku murmured, shoving himself to his feet and looking around. "Sango?"
"He's awake!" Shippou shouted. "How are you feeling, Kohaku?"
"Ah...who are you?"
"My name's Shippou! I'm Sango's friend!"
"Sango...my...my sister?"
"Yep!" Shippou twitched his tail happily.
Kohaku suddenly glanced at the neko youkai. "Kirara!" he exclaimed, and the small cat leapt into his arms. Petting her, he turned back to Shippou. "Where is Sango?"
Shippou frowned, the began to sniff the air. Grinning broadly, he pointed. "She's over there! And..." The kitsune's face fell . "And she's in trouble!"
Kirara immediately leapt to the ground and transformed into her larger form. The others climbed on and she ran towards the direction that Sango's scent was coming from.
As well as the direction of the terrified shrieks.
Kirara covered the distance extremely quickly and landed at the edge of the clearing. Shippou and Kohaku leapt from her back and stared into the middle of the area. A huge pit was in the middle, dust settling lightly into it. Shippou burst into tears.
"Oh, no! Miroku's wind tunnel must have sucked him and Sango up! What are we gonna DO?" Bawling at the top of his lungs, he missed the appearance of a hand over the edge of the crater. The taijiya pulled her upper body over the side and collapsed, sighing in relief.
Looking back, she spotted Miroku lying in the center of the pit, flat on his back. He looked to be in bad shape, but he was alive. Alive...
"Is Naraku...dead?" she wondered aloud. At the sound of her voice, Shippou immediately ceased his crying and launched himself at her.
"Sangoooooo!" he yelled, grabbing firmly to her neck. Kirara ran forward as well, transforming back into her smaller form and nuzzling her cheek.
"Kirara," Sango began. "I need for you to carry Miroku." The neko youkai purred and leapt into the hole, resuming her large shape. Sango began to slide down after her until she realized that there was someone who hadn't yet come forth. "Kohaku!"
Kohaku stepped forward, his eyes narrowed against the tears that threatened to fall. "Sango...I..."
Sango pushed herself to her feet and shakily stood, giving Kohaku a good look at her condition. Her slayer outfit was shredded in places, and a few pieces were inexplicably missing. Hiraikotsu was nowhere to be found and her katana lay quite far away, at the edge of the forest. Her hair was a mess, as if she had been caught in a storm. "Kohaku...do you remember?"
Kohaku nodded slowly, then could contain himself no longer. He leapt forward and hugged his sister as gently as he could, crying softly. "Sango, I'm sorry! Father and the others...I killed them all! I even tried to kill you! And I thought- I thought you were dead!"
Sango shushed the boy, patting his back. "Kohaku, I do not blame you. You were being controlled..." She looked up into the sky and saw that the glass- like barrier had vanished. "And I strongly suspect that the one who did that to you is dead." Hugging the boy tightly, despite her injuries, she pressed her face to the top of his head and murmured, "I missed you so much..."
They stayed like that for a while until Shippou cried, "Sango, HELP!!!!'
Sango whirled, groping for a nonexistent weapon, then burst into laughter as she saw the situation. Shippou had been trying to lift Miroku by himself and ended up pinned under the monk's weight. Kohaku joined in, then the two pitched in and hoisted the unconcious houshi onto Kirara's back. Once he was stable, the others climbed on as well, Sango remembering at the last moment to retrieve her katana from the ground.
"Find Inuyasha and Kagome, Kirara," she said. They rose from the ground, Sango's arms clasped tightly around Kohaku, who was sitting in front of her. 'My brother...' she thought. 'You have come back to me...'
---------------------------
Kagome clutched the tatters of her shirt to her body and slid to the ground, shaking. Inuyasha moved forward and lifted her cheek, forcing her to look at him. "Do you fear me, bitch?"
Kagome didn't answer, trying not to look into his fierce eyes. This seemed to piss him off, because he bellowed, "ANSWER ME!"
As these words left his lips, a searing pain ripped through her mark. Kagome gasped in shock and covered it with her hand. Finally, she muttered, "No...not afraid..." The pain stopped almost instantly. 'This form must give him a more intense control over my mark! It never hurt before...'
She trembled as Inuyasha reached downward and placed his hands on her sides. He flicked two of his claws and severed the waistband of her pants, making them much looser. "OSUWA-" she tried again, but she was halted when Inuyasha brought the back of one hand across her cheek savagely, sending her crashing to the ground.
"BITCH! You will do only what you're told!" Again, he reached down and dragged her to her feet rather roughly, digging ridges in her skin with his claws. He glared into her eyes for a second, then lowered his head, pressing his face against her stomach. Kagome squirmed and tried to back up, but he held her firm. She could feel his breath and half of her was terrified. The other half was incredibly aroused. What he did next quenched the second half.
Inuyasha nipped at her stomach, quite carefully for his elongated fangs. Kagome bit her lip and opened her mouth to cry the subduing word, but as soon as the thought crossed her mind, her mark seared again. Gasping at the combined pain, she remained silent, save for whimpers of fear.
Inuyasha sniffed carefully at the blood that he'd drawn from Kagome's stomach, then took a bit onto the tip of his tongue, ignoring the thrill that ran through his body at her taste. In that instant, he understood and raised his head once more, staring into Kagome's face.
"You're-" he began, but he halted as he heard something in the woods behind him. Holding fast to his mate, he smelled the air. Neko youkai. Young kitsune. And two- no, three- humans, one out cold. "What do they WANT?" Inuyasha raged, tensing but not releasing Kagome.
It wasn't long before the others entered the clearing. Shippou leapt from Sango's shoulder and squealed, "Inuyasha, Kagome! You're okay! Wha-" he stopped suddenly as he took in the situation. "I-I-Inuyasha?"
"We have to find Tetsusaiga..." Sango whispered. "Kirara, did you see what he did with it?" A yowl from the youkai was interpreted as 'yes'. "Take Kohaku there since you cannot touch it." Another yowl. "Kohaku," she said, addressing the boy this time, "go with Kirara. She'll take you to a sword. I need for you to bring it back here."
"Why-" Kohaku started, but one look from Sango shut him up. She looked frightened, very frightened. Reaching up, she slid Miroku from Kirara's back.
"Just go. Quickly, before he attacks!"
Kohaku nodded resolutely and leapt onto Kirara. The two vanished from sight as Sango and Shippou faced a seething Inuyasha.
"How dare you..." he hissed. "Meddling in our affairs..."
Sango took a deep breath and stepped forward. "Inuyasha, please listen! You don't want to hurt us!"
"Like hell I DON'T!" With these words, he leapt forward, claws outstretched. Sango barely managed to move, thinking, 'He's swift!'
Inuyasha had come to a halt a little distance away. "Hmm. I didn't think I'd have to move that quickly to kill you."
"Kagome! Say the word!" Shippou shouted in desperation. Kagome's eyes stayed locked on the ground, one hand clutching her shirt together and the other covering her mark.
Inuyasha snorted a derisive laugh. "She can't oppose me. She is MY bitch."
Shippou stared for a moment. Sango was injured, and Kagome couldn't even help by 'sitting' him! With a gulp, he realized that it was all up to him! Pulling a reddish leaf from his sleeve, he threw it at Inuyasha's feet. "Fox-fire illusion!" he shouted, and suddenly, a ring of fire formed around Inuyasha.
The hanyou/youkai looked around in mild surprise, then stepped calmly through them. "Your childish tricks won't work with me!" he hissed. "Flames have scent, idiot."
Shippou's face fell. 'Okay, new plan!' he thought. An instant later, he was cowering behind Sango's leg.
The taijiya was holding her katana in front of her, fear all over her face. If he were to attack her, she knew that he was too fast to block.
And she knew that he'd be aiming to kill.
