Free Ebook of the Week — Wit and Humor of America vol. 4; plus .epub coming soon

Back by popular demand, this week’s book is volume 4 of The Wit and Humor of America. Please let me know if you’d like yet another of these next week.

Also, please let me know if you would prefer to receive these books in .prc (MobiPocket Reader format), which works better than plain text for reading on the Kindle. I’m building a separate mailing list for Kindle users.

The Kid’s Book of the Week is “The Boys’ and Girls’ Plutarch.

Please let me know if you’d like me to add you to that distribution list.

Meanwhile, I’ve finally figured out how to convert my books to the ePub format, which works on the Barnes and Noble Nook, the Sony Reader, and many other book reading devices (but not the Kindle).

I plan to continue to use plain text (.txt) as my base — for the books on my CDs/DVDs, as well as for these mailings. (That works very well for many devices, including those used by the blind [with text-to-voice conversion]). But at the same time, I want to serve those who use the new book readers. I’ve been experimenting with .prc format for Kindle users. Now I need to do something similar for those who have other ebook readers.

The conversion to .prc is quick and easy. That’s why I offer that as an alternative to .txt for these mailings.

The conversion to .epub is more complicated and time-consuming; so I do not yet know how to handle that. Perhaps I’ll put together some collections of .epub books on CD. Perhaps I’ll sell them as email attachments (individually or by subscription) for less than a dollar a piece. Perhaps I’ll find some way to sell them as downloads. Suggestions welcome.

For starters, I’d like to send out an .epub version of this week’s book for free to all who request it. In returned, I’d hope for feedback — what device you are using to read it, what you like about this version, and what improvements you’d like me to make, and how important this format is to you.

Please spread the word.
